The goal

Redesign the kitchen and dining space of a 1950’s split level home. Maximize storage and provide flexible dining space within the original footprint. Use a sophisticated neutral palette that relies heavily on texture to reflect the client’s interests in the arts from primitive cultures.

Some highlights

Amidst smooth surfaces, a high level of visual texture and contrast becomes apparent. Cool stainless steel accentuates the warmth and pattern of zebrawood. Batik-like patterns in granite counters and glass backsplash tiles play against the subtle character of maple.

Strong geometric curved accents come through in custom designed elements, such as the curved metal brackets supporting the rounded outer edge of the peninsula. The shape is mirrored in the legs of the dining table.

Extending upper cabinets to the ceiling maximizes storage. Even toe-kick space is not wasted, housing a step stool and drawer storage for dog dishes. Additional drawer storage forms the base of the generous banquette seat.

The flexible dining space accommodates several scenarios. When leaves are added to the custom round table, seating capacity is expanded to 12. Another scenario allows for two round tables, one in each corner, to seat 16. Dining chairs stack to save space while not in use.
